Meet our Summer 2024 Technical Instructors

At Hack the Hood, our mission to empower technology creators and leaders comes to life through our dedicated Technical Instructors. These passionate individuals are the heart of our Hustle and Build classes, guiding learners through an exciting journey of coding, data science, and tech-driven social change.

This summer marks an exciting shift in our program delivery. We've transitioned from our full-time staff teaching all classes to a "train the trainer" model, employing a diverse team of skilled Technical Instructors. This change allows us to scale our impact while maintaining the high-quality instruction that defines Hack the Hood.

Our instructors are true multi-taskers, wearing many hats to ensure the success of our programs. In the classroom, they lead engaging lectures and Learning Labs, introducing learners to Python programming and fundamental data science skills. They guide Tiger Teams in smaller group settings, fostering collaborative problem-solving skills. Through one-on-one tutoring and office hours, they provide personalized support, ensuring each learner can overcome challenges and thrive.

Our Technical Instructors bring a unique blend of expertise, teaching experience, and passion for social justice. They understand the importance of representation in tech and create an inclusive environment where every student can envision themselves as future tech leaders. As we continue to evolve, our instructors remain at the forefront of our efforts to bridge the gap between technical skills and thriving in technology careers for underrepresented communities.

Meet our Summer 2024 Technical Instructors:

Clarkston VanScott Ellerby is a passionate Software Engineer working for LucidTrade and HDDN Gems. His journey includes developing innovative solutions, like an app for Slack at Salesforce and a robust system at Amazon.

He’s skilled in Python, SDLC, C++, Data Science, and more. With a BS in Software Engineering from Morehouse College, he thrive on problem-solving and effective communication. He’s dedicated to making a positive impact in the tech industry, blending technical expertise with a love for mentoring.

Kendall Holmes (they/them) is a software developer and educator looking to use their powers for good! As a person who is passionate about both technology and people, Kendall graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Computer Science and a minor in Sociology.

After spending a few years in DevOps, Kendall recognized there were a lot of social issues within the tech industry that made it difficult for marginalized communities to thrive. So, Kendall pivoted to tech education with a focus on groups who are often overlooked. Now, Kendall has been teaching for 3 years, and they have loved every second.

Anas Aly is a software developer and computer science student at Stetson University. As president of Stetson's Computer Science Club, he demonstrates leadership in his field. With expertise in web development technologies like React and Node.js, he has developed several impactful full-stack applications.

Anas also contributes to campus diversity, having served on the board of the Middle Eastern North African Association and helped found the African Student Union. Anas actively contributes to open-source projects and is passionate about using technology to create positive change.

Ever since Jasmine Dortch was little, she always loved to create, no matter what it is. Growing up in Chicago, her fascination with technology and creativity led her to a diverse career in the film industry, where she honed her technical skills.

She successfully transitioned to coding and robotics, blending her passion for creation with cutting-edge technology. With a background that bridges the arts and sciences, she is deeply committed to spreading and gaining knowledge in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

Yoline Banerjee holds a background in sociology and education and has worked within the international community before living in Korea. Upon returning, she pursued a new path in software development working on a variety of open source projects by building different website applications.

Passionate about blending technology and education, Yoline is happy to become an active member of Hack the Hood's community as a Technical Instructor. In her spare time, Yoline enjoys ultimate frisbee, playing board games and DnD, biking, and exploring different cuisines. She is always eager to learn new skills and take on new challenges.
